Question:
I have questions about the section 8 housing and how to apply for this. I'm trying research this for my son who is trying to find a place to live in the Dallas/Garland/Mesquite area. He makes about 20K - 25K annually. He is a single parent of two boys that he has every other weeekend and would like to be able to get a two bedroom apartment if he can afford it. He feels he can afford about 500 - 700 max a month. After he pays his child support and other incidentals it does not leave much to live on. How would he go about quilifying for the section 8 housing. He would like to move on this fairly quickly. Is this even a possibility? Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Answer:
Hi _______ (name withheld),
First of all we are not Section 8 or affiliated with them in any way, we do accept section 8 vouchers. If you would like to find out more, please go to http://www.dhadal.com/ to find out more info. This is the Dallas Housing Authorities website.
Section 8 housing, from my experience, usually requires patience. They take sometimes up to 5 or 10 years to get on the list when they have places available, but it could be as quick as a few months for some people. Once you get a Section 8 voucher from DHA (dallas housing authority) then they will give you a list of apartment communities that accept their vouchers, and you choose your own place to live, after that, the apartment manager would have to fill out your voucher, and you would return it to DHA for approval. If approved, then the DHA would come out and inspect your future apartment. After the inspection, and only after, you would sign the lease with the apartment manager and DHA would send a check directly to the office about 1 month after you move in.
You would still have to fill out an application, pass any requirements of that particular apartment complex, and be approved. Most apartment complexes do a criminal background check, and credit check, as well as call your past residence to make sure you paid on time, and were a good tenant.
Requirement and restrictions will vary by apartment community.
I hope this information helps a bit. Good luck,
Sincerely,
Manager
